Why and how.

Kasper Kovitz »The Lessons«

What if art does not provide answers, but poses new questions? In »The Lessons« Kasper Kovitz explores the boundaries between method and mystery, between system and free gesture.

Based on standardised ‘Lesson Sheets’ - six sober drawings about art lessons, culture and artistic reactions - Kovitz develops a series of paintings that make the dynamics of learning and creative transformation visible. By placing himself in the roles of 34 fictional art students, he explores how imagination, education and spontaneous superimposition create new layers of meaning and poetry.

The works celebrate the unfinished, the transgression of preconceptions and the power of the imaginary. They negotiate the eternal artist's question: when is a work finished - and when does it begin to speak?
