Painting Pain

Marilyn Manson/David Lynch Artist Book

Marilyn Manson is known as a notorious rock musician and scandal figure. But not really as a painter. The catalog—his first—compiles a wealth of his watercolors, which seem gentle in form, but the image motifs stand in a sharp contrast: human primal fears, loss, desperation, self-estrangement.

One of Manson’s inspirations is the director David Lynch. The severity of Lynch’s films, the aestheticization of pain, and the reflection on deformations and perishability of the human body are qualities also inherent to Manson’s graphic art.
